Overgrown Cork road converted into community walkway

Mayor Co Cork, Cllr Alan Coleman, has today opened the a new recreational routeway near the village of Carrigtwohill.

The Tullagreen Community Walkway, which connects the IDA Business Park with the nearby Fota Business Park, has been in development since 2011.

The walkway forms part of the old Cork to Midleton Road, which had fallen into disuse and become overgrown.

"This initiative is a wonderful example of a community coming together with the local authority and a leading employer in the area to make a difference and create something really special," said Cllr Coleman.

"I have no doubt that the walkway will be of tremendous benefit to local people and visitors alike for many years to come."

The project was spearheaded by the Carrigtwohill Community Council, in partnership with Cork County Council and the global biopharmaceutical company, AbbVie.

GE Healthcare donated a parcel of land for the walkway, while AbbVie has so far donated €20,000 to the project and has committed to its ongoing maintenance.
