The remains of a man has been recovered from the sea in Co Clare.

The alarm was raised at around 11.30am after the man was seen falling from the Cliffs of Moher just south of the main viewing platform.

Gardaí and members of the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard were alerted and travelled to the scene. The Shannon based search and rescue helicopter was also requested to assist.

The body could be seen in the water below and the rescue boat was directed to the area by personnel on the clifftop and the helicopter crew.

After being recovered from the water, the body was removed to the Coast Guard base at Doolin and later transferred to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination is expected to be carried out.
