A former government minister says lawyers would be the only winners if a "conscience clause" was included as part of same-sex marriage laws.

The idea has come up again after comments from the Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin.

He sees it as a way for businesses to opt out of providing goods or services for gay weddings, if the referendum is passed.

However Pat Carey, who recently spoke publicly about coming out, said the idea is open to exploitation and it would only work to the advantage of lawyers.
