A protest over the jailing of water protestors is taking place in Dublin city centre this afternoon.

Campaigners are planning a march from Central Bank to Mountjoy Prison from 2pm.

Four people are serving sentences for breaching a court order not to obstruct the installation of water meters.

Two of the protestors were given sentences of 56 days, while two others were sentenced to 28 days in jail.

Another demonstrator, who is out of the country at the moment, also faces a jail sentence.

Dublin City Councillor for the Anti Austerity Alliance Micheal O'Brien, does not think the jailing of the protestors will deter others from showing their opposition to the charges.

Meanwhile, the Right 2 Water campaign group is planning a protest outside Fine Gael's national conference in Mayo today.

The demonstration at the Government party's meeting in Castlebar is also calling for the immediate release of the jailed anti-water charge protesters.

Organisers of the protest say today's event comes ahead of national demonstration planned for March 21.
