Care-home managers 'should be responsible for elder abuse in their facilities'

Managers of state-run care homes where elder abuse is discovered should be held accountable, account to a support service set up following recent revelations of abuse and poor care in state operated facilities.

It wants legislation to tackle abuse of older people and vulnerable adults and an investigation into shortcomings in the system.

Lourda Finn's father Gerald died while in care in 2007. Lourda and her sister Sharon had raised concerns over bruising on his body, over-medication and other issues while he was in care in Co Clare. A GP later found no evidence of maltreatment.

She says a number of measures must be put in place and called for mandatory reporting within 24 hours of abuse taking place in any unit.

She also said: "Management of these units should be held to account for the acts and omissions of their employees."
