Off-duty garda shot twice in New Orleans mugging

There are reports that an off-duty garda has been shot while on holidays in New Orleans.

The garda, who is in his 20s and is reported to be based in Newcastlewest in Limerick, is being treated in intensive care after the attempted mugging.

The Irish Mirror reports that he was shot in the lower back and leg when a gunman confronted him in New Orleans within the last 24 hours.

The Mirror also reports he has been speaking to staff and is making a recovery.

11.16am UPDATE: The injured garda is believed to be in a critical condition in hospital.
