An independent review has been ordered and the hospital is contacting the families of the seven babies.

Minister Leo Varadkar says it is important that women expecting babies know the services available are safe.

"My first concern of course is for the seven families who are involved and particularly of course the two families who lost children in these cases that are under review," he said.

"I think it's important, of course, to reassure people that maternity services in Ireland are safe."
