Bord Gáis cuts gas and electricity prices

Bord Gáis Energy has announced it is cutting the unit price of gas by 3.5% and electricity by 2.5%.

The company said it will save consumers over €29 a year on average gas bills and €25 for electricity.

However, its only a fraction of the fall in wholesale gas prices, which are down 30% in recent months.

The Government has been called on to demand greater reductions, but Junior Energy Minister Joe McHugh said the Government has no role to play, and consumers should shop around.

"Consumers can, in many cases, have mitigated electricity and gas prices by going to various suppliers to get the best possible price and service deal … I would encourage people to continue to do [that]."

He said the public should make use of price comparison websites approved by the regulator.
