FG backbencher contradicts Varadkar on abortion referendum

A Fine Gael backbencher says the current Government does have a mandate to put a referendum on abortion to the people.

Eoghan Murphy's comments differ from Health Minister Leo Varadkar who says, while our laws are too restrictive, the Coalition has no mandate to hold a vote on repealing the 8th Amendment.

Last night the Dáil rejected another attempt from Independent TD Clare Daly to pass a law requiring a referendum to be held.

Dublin South East Fine Gael TD, Eoghan Murphy, says this is an issue this Government should be dealing with.

He said: "This change won’t happen tonight, but I believe it will happen soon. The Government does have a mandate to hold a referendum on this before the next election.

"Of course it does, it's why we put people in a position to lead and be leaders.

"But still, it is worth considering if it is in fact wise or best to hold a referendum when the atmosphere is so politically charged coming up to the next General Election."
