Report recommends free dental care for under 6's

A new dental health report is recommending free dentist visits for the under 6's.

The Coalition has already promised free GP care for young children by next year.

Now the Oral Health Forum says the scheme should be extended to offer dental care to children also.

The group's first ever national report, published today, finds there are significant problems with the oral health of the nation and blames Government cut backs.

Spokesman for the Oral Health Forum, Fintan Hourihan said: "What we need to see is targetted funding for specialist groups such as special needs patients and children.

"We are aware there is legislation to free GP check-ups for under 6's, we feel a first dental visit for under 6's would also be appropriate.

"If there is legislation being brought in, why not also allow early visits to the dentist?"
