It has emerged the 26-year-old driver of a car that drove into three elderly pedestrians in Parteen in Co Clare on Thursday was on bail at the time of the incident.

The man has been charged with two counts of burglary arising out of the Parteen incident and will appear before Limerick District Court this afternoon.

One of the pensioners hit had to have his leg amputated and remains in a critical condition in hospital.

The driver of the car was being pursued by a Garda Patrol car at the time of the crash. The Garda Ombudsman is investigating the incident.
