Man dead after morning shooting in Balbriggan

A man has died after he was shot several times in north Dublin.

It happened after he dropped his child off at the local school in Balbriggan at around 9 o'clock this morning.

The victim, who is in his mid-30s, was gunned down in front of his partner after they dropped their child to school this morning.

Their car was parked on Clonard Street -- just a short distance from the local school.

The gunman fired several shots as they made their way back to the car and his target collapsed on the footpath. A local resident gave him CPR but he died shortly afterwards.

His partner was shot in the leg during the attack and is being treated in Beaumont hospital.

Locals described seeing the shooter driving away at speed.

A large section of the street has been sealed off and the man's body is still at the scene.

There were some distressing scenes earlier when the victim's brother arrived and demanded to see the body.

A technical exam is due to get underway shortly and Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward
