Bill launched to create specific offence for sexual grooming of children

TDs and Senators are being asked to consider passing a law which would create a specific offence of child grooming for sexual exploitation.

The crime is broadly covered under current legislation but critics believe it is too vague in many areas.

If introduced, the new law would set a maximum prison sentence of 14 years for those convicted.

Launching the bill today, Fine Gael TD Marcella Corcoran Kennedy said it was recommended by the joint Oireacthas Committee on Justice last year, and she hoes it will be passed quickly.

"It's a very simple bill, but ... I think it's very important," she said.
