7,000+ phones seized in prisons in five years

More than 7,000 phones have been seized in our prisons since 2009.

Better security measures have reduced the number of mobiles getting into jails, according to a report The Herald.

7,215 mobiles have been confiscated in prisons over five years – a rate of four a day.

Figures from the Prison Service show a clamp-down on phones in jails has enjoyed increasing success in recent years.

In 2010, 1718 phones were confiscated, reduced to a little over 1,300 in 2011.

Last year the figure was just over 800.

Wayne Dundon, who ordered a hit on businessman Roy Collins from jail, was found guilty of murder this week.
