Calls for religious orders to open access to infant burial sites

Religious orders around the country are being urged to open infant burial sites to the public.

The call coincides with a memorial service today for children who died in the care of Catholic nuns in County Tipperary.

Dozens of newborns are believed to be buried on the grounds of the Seán Ross Abbey mother and baby home.

It was run by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart Of Jesus until it shut in the 1970s.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny was called on during the week to launch an independent inquiry into the high number of deaths at care homes run by religious orders.
