A ceremony to mark the naming and commissioning for the new Naval Service ship, the LÉ Samuel Beckett is underway in Dublin.

The event, at the Samuel Beckett Bridge was carried out by a niece of Samuel Beckett, Caroline Murphy.

The Taoiseach and Minister for Defence Enda Kenny attended today's event.

The LÉ Samuel Beckett is the first of its class, an offshore patrol vessel. It is 90 metres long, weighs over 1,900 tonnes, and has a a maximum speed of 23 knots. It cost €54m.
