Politicians meet to discuss minimum alcohol price

The impact alcohol has on crime will be discussed this afternoon, as the Oireachtas committee on Justice meet to examine minimum pricing of drink.

Alcohol Action Ireland says €1.2bn of taxpayers' money is lost on alcohol related offences.

The charity claims there's been a significant decrease in public order offence, in countries where minimum pricing has been introduced.

"We've seen a 10% increase in price, a small decrease in alcohol consumption, but a major drop in public order offices," said Suzanne Costello, CEO of Alcohol Action Ireland.

"The exciting thing about minimum unit pricing is the fact that it's a very targeted response. The person who's drinking within their low-risk limits will hardly notice it at all

"People at pubs clubs and restaurants will remain unaffected by it."
