HSE 2014 plan due today with €666m in savings

The HSE Service Plan for 2014 will be delivered to the Minister for Health today.

The plan has been delayed for a number of weeks as the HSE attempted to find €666m worth of savings next year. James Reilly then has three weeks to give it his approval and publish it.

It's unclear if the plan will contain any measures to deal with the controversial issue of top-up payments for senior hospital executives.

Industry Correspondent with the Irish Times, Martin Wall, said the issue has angered public sector unions, with more revelations set to emerge this week:

"Their members have taken the pension levy, they've had two pay cuts over recent years … and they see that there were additional payments being made … to senior people."

"As this issue moves through the [committees] in the Oireachtas, there is, probably, going to be more revelations coming out."
