A major search was under way in Co Galway this morning for a man missing from a nursing home.

Frank Helly, who is in his 80s, is thought to have strayed from the nursing home in Moycullen, about eight miles from Galway city.

The missing man, who is originally from Salthill, was last seen at the Moycullen Nursing Home at about 7pm yesterday evening.

The alarm was raised when staff checked his room and gardaí were today co-ordinating a search involving family, friends and members of the local community.

The Coastguard helicopter and Casla Bay rescue team joined the search this morning.

Gardaí are asking farmers and landowners between Moycullen and the city to check outbuildings and their land.

Superintendent Noel Kelly appealed to anyone who may have seen Mr Helly along the road or given him a lift, particularly taxi drivers, to contact Salthill garda station at 091-514720.

He is described as about 6 feet 1 inch in height and, when last seen was wearing a blue shirt with a maroon sweater and khaki-coloured trousers.
