A man in his 40's has died after being recovered from the Avoca River in Arklow, Co Wicklow.

A man in his 40's has died after being recovered from the Avoca River in Arklow, Co Wicklow.

A major search and rescue operation was launched after two men entered the water at the Bridgewater Shopping Centre around 4.30am this morning.

One man made it to shore and raised the alarm.

Emergency services located the body of the second man a short time later near the North Quay, efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has now been removed to Loughlinstown Hospital.

Meanwhile, Irish Coastguard units along with the coastguard helicopter were involved a search operation for two other people who it was thought may have entered the water but this search has since been stood down.

GardaĂ­ are continuing to investigate the incident.
