Watchdog asked to investigate use of teens' Facebook photos

The Data Protection Commissioner is being asked to examine permissions for the use of photographs of teenagers on Facebook.

Youth Work Ireland is expressing concern that the site infers parental consent for the use of photographs - and claims it may be a breach of data protection rules.

"We would like them to look now more particularly at young people and teenagers and how their photographs are used," said Spokesman Michael McLoughlin.

"[We'd like the Commissioner to look at] how their parents are involved or not involved, because the consent of the young person is taken from the fact that they're using the site, and the parent has no real involvement at all, and these people can only be 13 or 14."
