Ms Hanks, 33, has since been charged with first degree murder.

A spokeswoman said the Department of Foreign Affairs had offered assistance to Mr Haverty’s family, who remain in Ireland.

“We do not give information on individuals but we can confirm that we are providing consular assistance to the victim’s family,” she said.

It is understood Mr Haverty, 39, had been living in the US for a considerable time.

The accused, Ms Hanks, told police she shot Mr Haverty following a heated argument in which she claims he “battered” her and approached her with a knife.
