Labour Councillor Jenny McHugh has switched her party allegiance to Fianna Fáil.

McHugh, who is a Meath County Councillor from Trim, announced the decision today.

The mother of seven ran in the Meath West constituency for Labour at the last election, and secured more than half a quota.

Councillor McHugh said Fianna Fáil matched her own personal values.

"Over the last three years it has become increasingly clear to me that the party which most closely share those values that I have is the Fianna Fáil party, under its leader, Micheál Martin," she said.

"I thank you for accepting me into your party. I am look forward to working with Micheál and the Fianna Fáil team in Meath to play my part for a fairer society."

She is the principal of Johnstown National School and was the first female chairperson of County Meath VEC.
