Heavy rain following heatwave will cause dangerous conditions, RSA warns

As heavy rain begins to pour in parts of the country, drivers are being warned to take extra care.

The Road Safety Authority says following weeks of dry weather, rainfall will make patches of road greasy and slippy.

AA Roadwatch says roads are very wet in Galway city after heavy rainfall. The N17 from Claregalway to the Tuam Road junction is in particularily poor condition.

RSA Spokesperson Brian Farrell is encouraging drivers to pay careful attention to driving condition over the next few days.

"Constant traffic on the roads has almost polished the road surface. We've seen a buildup of tar, rubber and oil deposit on the road as well," he explained.

"So when it rains and [this deposit] mixes with the rain, it really does represent greasy and slippy road conditions for drivers."

He called for motorists to be aware and alter their driving style to be cautious.
