The upkeep of Farmleigh House in Dublin's Phoenix Park has cost nearly €39m (€38.75) since 2001.

The State owned residence was bought by the Irish government from the Guinness family in 1999 and is used to entertain dignitaries and heads of state.

It is also open to the public and according to the Irish Times, more than 375,000 people visited Farmleigh last year, while another 2,000 attended high-level events.

Between 2001 and 2012, the likes of ousted Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarack, former US president Jimmy Carter and Queen Elizabeth the second stayed at Farmleigh.
