A post mortem examination will be carried out today on the body of a 10-year-old boy who drowned off the Cork coast.

It happened in Youghal at around 5pm yesterday evening.

The alarm was raised and the rescue helicopter based in Waterford was tasked - along with the Youghal lifeboat and the volunteer coastguard unit.

The boy was located a short time later - he was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Sammy Revins is the Mayor of Youghal Town Council:

"I'm totally shocked, I have been down there with my own kids using it and it is one of the safest beaches in Ireland," said the Mayor of Youghal Town Council Sammy Revins.

"It is a tragedy."
