Judge says evidence by Quinn family is ‘unsatisfactory' and 'implausible’

A judge has described evidence given to the Commercial Court by family members of bankrupt businessman Sean Quinn as ‘unsatisfactory' and at times 'implausible’.

Mr Justice Peter Kelly has ruled the five Quinn children and two of their spouses will have to disclose to IBRC further details of their finances following their cross examination by the bank last March.

IBRC spent five days last March grilling Ciara, Aoife, Collette, Brenda and Sean Quinn Jnr along with in-laws Stephen Kelly and Niall McPartland about disclosure of their assets and bank accounts.

The bank was not satisfied with the answers they received and now we know neither was Mr Justice Peter Kelly who in a judgment today has described some of their evidence as ‘quite extraordinary’ and ‘at times incredible’

For instance he said that it is difficult to believe the Quinns had no documents relating to their highly lucrative contracts of employment with companies in their International Property Group.

What is even less believable, he finds, is that there is no documentation in respect of the spending of these salaries and this he finds directly relevant to the issue of assets being put beyond the reach of IBRC

He found that in many areas disclosure was substandard and he has ordered the Quinns to put it right.
