A rally driver has been killed during a race in Waterford, event organisers said.

Paul Mulcahy from Dungarvan in County Waterford was fatally injured following an accident during the Ravens Rock Rally in his home county today.

Race officials cancelled the rest of the event as a mark of respect.

A statement from Motorsport Ireland said: “Motorsport Ireland deeply regrets that competitor Paul Mulcahy of Dungarvan, Co.Waterford, has passed away following injuries received in a tragic accident that occurred during stage 4 of the Carrick-on-Suir Stages Rally which took place today.

“Motorsport Ireland and Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club extend their heartfelt sympathy to Paul’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this very sad time.”

The event was part of the Dunlop National Rally Championship.
