Journalist's death 'senseless and unnecessary'

The brother of the late journalist Eugene Moloney has called his violent death senseless and unnecessary.

CCTV shows the 55-year-old’s attacker Gary Burch punching him in the head and then dancing in celebration when the journalist fell to the ground in Dublin city centre last year.

Next Monday marks the first anniversary of Moloney’s death.

The journalist got into a row and was punched in the neck on Camden Street on his way home from a stag party.

Burch, a 22-year-old apprentice mechanic of Kennington Close, Templeogue, later told gardaí that it was a moment of craziness and his lawyers say he now wants to atone for his crime by going to jail.

In a victim impact statement, Eugene Moloney’s brother Sean called the killing senseless and unnecessary in a society where senseless violence is sadly becoming the norm.

Judge Mary Ellen Ring will finalise sentencing in two weeks' time.
