The Marine Institute in Galway looks set to become one of the leading oceanic research centres in the world after today.

A major international transatlantic deal will be signed in Oranmore this afternoon in which the EU and North America will commit to funding and expertise for research to explore ways in which ocean life can contribute to science.

Among those attending will be the Taoiseach Enda Kenny, the EU Commissioner Máire Geoghegan Quinn, Canadian officials and the US Assistant Secretary of State for the Oceans and Scientific Affairs Dr Kerri-Ann Jones.
