Health Minister James Reilly said today that the lessons learned from the inquest into the death of Savita Hallapanavar will feed into new guidelines.

Health Minister James Reilly said today that the lessons learned from the inquest into the death of Savita Halappanavar will feed into new guidelines.

Minister Reilly also said he would have no problem in issuing an apology to Praveen Halappanavar for the way his wife was cared for.

He made the remarks after the jury at Savita Halappanavar's inquest returned a verdict of medical misadventure and also strongly endorsed nine medical recommendations aimed at preventing similar fatalities in the future.

Speaking in Cork, Minister James Reilly said lessons would be learned from the inquest.

"Everything we learn from the inquest, from the clinical review, and from the HIQA examination of this tragedy will feed into guidelines, protocols and checklists in maternity and other hospitals to keep patients safe," he said.

Mrs Halappanavar died from septicaemia at Galway University Hospital last October 28 following a miscarriage.

Her request for an abortion had been turned down five days earlier.
