Weather warning issued - more gale-force winds expected

Drivers are being urged to take extra care on the roads as gale-force winds are forecast for this evening and tonight.

A status-orange weather warning is in effect, as Met Éireann predicts winds of up to 130km per hour in parts of Munster, Leinster, Galway and Mayo.

Met Éireann has also issued a Marine Weather Warning, predicting winds that will reach "storm force for a time this evening from Mizen Head to Valentia to Slyne Head".

The Road Safety Authority is advising motorists to slow down and to expect the unexpected.

Brian Farrell, CEO of the RSA, said that motorcyclists, truck drivers and bus drivers need to take extra care.

"For road users, the message is to be aware of fallen debris on the roads, and being blown out on to the road into your path," he said.

"In those winds, control of the vehicle can be difficult, especially on open roads like motorways, where there is a danger of strong cross-winds."
