The alarm was raised at about 11.20am today when the 35-year-old went swimming off Dalkey Island and did not return.

A major search operation was launched and the Garda Water Unit pulled the man from the sea south of Sorrento Terrace.

The man was airlifted to Tallaght Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

RNLI lifeboats from Dun Laoghaire, a coast guard unit and the coast guard rescue helicopter were also involved in the operation.
