Bail for pair charged in connection with cocaine haul

A man and woman, charged in connection with the seizure of €70,000 worth of cocaine in Cork at the weekend, have been remanded on bail today.

Cork District Court heard that one of the accused, Padraig Gavin, hired a car in Dublin for the drugs transaction.

The court also heard that detectives from the Drugs Squad observed a man getting out of a rented car at Sallybrook Glanmire last Saturday and place a package in the back of another car.

Gardaí retrieved the package which contained one kilo of cocaine and they arrested two people.

Padraig Gavin (aged 56) of Rockville Crescent Blackrock Dublin and 22-year old Jennifer Heaphy of Kerryhall Road, Fairhill, Cork were arrested and charged.

Detective Garda Declan Keane said that Gavin, a part time taxi driver, had rented a car and when arrested he was wearing gloves and was in possession of wipes, which could be used to clean fingerprints.

He said gardaí were concerned that he may leave the country if released on bail.

The accused handed his passport into court today and was released on bail to appear in court again on April 9.
