'It could be any one of our children': Cork community devastated as boy critically ill after river fall

A seven-year-old boy remains in critical condition after he was pulled from a river yesterday evening in Co Cork.

The boy was playing with three other boys in the Tir Cluain estate on the Fermoy Road in Midleton, when he slipped and fell into the Owenacurra river at around 6.15pm.

He has been airlifted to the Children's Hospital in Crumlin, where he is believed to be in an induced coma.

The boy's neighbour John Shanahan said his 10-year-old son came running home and raised the alarm, and his brother-in-law drove to try to rescue the boy from the water.

He says the community is in shock.

"We're devastated…It could be any one of our children," he said.

"My wife has said it from the start since we moved in here four years ago, that the river is a danger and the fence was inadequate."

He said the river had previously claimed a number of lives.
