Two held in Cork in relation to dissident republican activity

Two men remain in garda custody in Cork this morning in relation to dissident republican activity.

The men - who are both in their 30s - were arrested yesterday when officers stopped a van in the Deanrock area of the city.

Two handguns and a ten-gallon drum of petrol were also seized.

Gardaí say their investigation was at a very early stage, but that they believed they had foiled a significant dissident operation.

The men are being held at Togher garda station.
