Report: Local authorities may chase homeowners for unpaid development levies

Hard pressed homeowners may be hit with yet another charge.

The Sunday Business Post reports this morning that county councils or local authorities have the right to recoup the cost of unpaid development levies from homeowners.

Development levies are charged to developers to connect properties to public services and utilities, much of which have gone unpaid.

Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly has confirmed that councils are legally entitled to pursue homeowners for the unpaid charges.

The newspaper reports this morning that Wicklow County Council, which is seeking a total payment of over €65,000, has sent letters to homeowners requesting payments of up to €4,800.
