'No question' of confronting judges over pay: Shatter

Justice Minister Alan Shatter has said there is no question of a confrontation with judges over their working conditions.

Alan Shatter has written to the Chief Justice Mrs Justice Susan Denham, looking for a series of reforms including longer working hours and shorter holidays.

High Court judges have already met to discuss the letter. It is understood some are unhappy with the request, saying it encroaches on their independence.

But Minister Shatter said the judiciary wanted to play its part in finding greater efficiencies in the courts service.

"There's no question of crisis or confrontation," he said. "We've pointed out to the Chief Justice the range of issues that are under consideration in the wider public service and requested that she might consider what (judges) can contribute."
