EU President Herman Van Rompuy's expressed hope that the Union's 27 leaders can tonight add to a good week, that began with picking up the Nobel Peace Prize.

He was speaking in Brussels at the last EU summit of the year

At the talks, leaders are debating a report drawn up by Van Rompuy that proposes steps towards greater economic integration in the eurozone, eventually with a common "fiscal capacity" and binding reform commitments.

Speaking in Brussels earlier, Taoiseach Enda Kenny hailed last night's agreement by EU Finance Ministers on deal over banking supervision, which he said is an important step towards a eurozone banking union:
