Helpline launched for people who 'want to stay missing'

A special helpline has been set up for people who have been reported missing and want to stay missing - to enable them to let their families know they are alive and well.

Thousands of Missing Persons reports are received by gardaí each year, and while no official statistics are available, it is expected that some will have run away or gone missing by personal choice.

The Missing Persons Helpline has launched a "Message Home" service on Freefone 1800 911 999, where they can leave a message which will be passed on.

Calls cannot be traced and the phoneline will be operational around the clock.
