Hotel of Doom to open quarter of a century late

A hotel in North Korea looks set to finally open its doors 25 years after construction began.

The Ryugyong Hotel - which has been dubbed the Hotel of Doom - was originally due to be completed in 1989 after work started on it in 1987, but building had to be stopped in the mid-1990s following an economic crisis in the country.

There were concerns the 1,082ft-tall hotel - which was originally built to steal the limelight from South Korea when the country hosted the 1988 Olympics - would never get built, but an Egyptian company took over the development last year and forked out £111m (€137m) to coat the building in glass.
