Customs seize eight million cigarettes at Dublin Port
Eight million contraband cigarettes have been seized at Dublin Port.
Revenue's Customs service made the find yesterday, and say it has an estimated retail value of €3.1m.
The brands included 'Top Mountain', 'Bon International', 'Royal' and 'Jim', and they arrived in a shipment described as 'chilled foodstuffs' in a refrigerated unit, but they were found during an examination of the unit after routine scanning.
An Irish-registered, commercial vehicle and a refrigerated trailer were seized, and the driver, who is in his 40s, was interviewed.
Up to 89.5 million contraband cigarettes have now been seized to date in 2012.
