Bahrain court jails Irish-trained doctor

An Irish-trained medic is among six people arrested in Bahrain today for their role in last year's pro-reform uprising.

Dr Ali Esa Mansoor al-Ekri, who trained as an orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal College of Surgeons, has been sentenced to five years in prison.

At the time of the arrests, their families and lawyers were not told where they were being taken.

Amnesty International Ireland is calling for their unconditional release and insists they have been jailed for "peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression and assembly".
