Man dies from injuries after Down assault

A 47-year-old man has died following a serious assault.

The victim, who was in a critical condition in hospital, died from his injuries.

Police arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the murder, following the attack in the Dromore Street area of Ballynahinch in the early hours.

Detectives in Downpatrick are quizzing him about the attack which was reported at around 12.45am.

Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard said the local community has been left in shock. He described the incident as a vicious attack and called for anyone with information to help the PSNI with their inquiries.

“The man who was murdered is well known in the local area and was heavily involved in the local community especially in soccer circles,” said Mr Hazzard.

“There is huge shock to the local community at this senseless act.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
