Officers from the Revenue Custom Service, assisted by Gardaí in Monaghan, uncovered an oil laundering plant in Clontibret, Co. Monaghan earlier today.

The plant, which was located in a disused mushroom house, had the capacity to launder approximately two million litres of fuel per annum with a potential loss to the exchequer of €1m per annum.

An estimated 10,000 litres of laundered fuel, nine bags of bleaching agent, a car and a van were seized at the site. Officers also discovered eight tonnes of toxic sludge in eight Intermediate Bulk Containers.

The operation was the the result of surveillance activity carried out by Revenue's Customs Service and forms part of Revenue's on-going crackdown on laundered fuel.
