The mother of a boy found dead at his home in north Cork has been charged with his murder.

Diane Ward, 43, of Harrison Place in Charleville, Co Cork, attended a brief sitting of Limerick District Court this evening.

Eight-year-old Anthony Ward's body was discovered in his bed at their home in Charleville on Monday morning.

Ms Ward was arrested in Cork city yesterday, before being questioned at Mallow Garda Station.

When charged, she made no reply.

The court directed that she be medically assessed and seen by a consultant forensic psychiatrist.

Ms Ward has been remanded in custody to the closed, medium security Dochas Centre in Dublin and will appear in court again in Newcastlewest next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the removal of Anthony Ward has taken place.

Anthony's remains had been lying in repose at Hawe's Funeral Home, in Charleville, Co. Cork, but were removed to the Holy Cross Church in Charleville this evening.

He will be buried tomorrow in Holy Cross Cemetery, after Requiem Mass at Holy Cross Church in Charleville at 2.30pm tomorrow.
