Gardaí are continuing to question a woman in her 40s in connection with the death of a child in Co Cork.

The body of eight-year-old Anthony Ward was found at his home in Charleville on Monday, when he was due to return to school.

The woman was arrested yesterday evening, and brought to Mallow garda station for questioning.

She is being held under section four of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows for her detention for up to 24 hours before she is either released or charged.

Emergency crews found his body in the bedroom of his home, when they were called to the bungalow in Charleville at around 9.30am that morning.

A post mortem carried out yesterday revealed that he died from asphyxia.
