ISPCA want sulky racing banned

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is calling for a complete ban on the practice of sulky road racing - a tradition of racing young horses and ponies on roads and other rough terrrain.

According to the ISPCA, the practice completely disregards the welfare of the animal, with many young horses injured beyond repair and others abandoned from injuries.

Chairperson of the ISPCA, Barbara Bent said: "So many of them get injuries and end up very badly cut. We get quite a few of them injured with a variety of things and a lot of them never really recover.

"Their joints are so damaged that by the time we rescue them they don't really have a great future."
