Ó Briain all a-Twitter at Olympics

Comedian Dara Ó Briain tweeted an offbeat commentary of the Olympic men’s volleyball to his one million followers today.

The stand-up comic, famous also for presenting television shows such as ‘Mock the Week’ and ‘The Apprentice: You’re Fired’, took his place in the public gallery to watch Germany beat Serbia and Bulgaria whitewash Australia.

He said: “I was tweeting point-by-point, so I may have shed followers by the bucketload. I wasn’t expecting there to be six match points in one of the games.

“It was great, it was very good. I still don’t know why there are people wearing a different colour, and watching the game doesn’t explain that!”

Ó Briain was at the North Greenwich Arena to watch the men’s individual gymnastics final yesterday and, after staying up until midnight to book returned tickets on the Games’ official website, has a busy schedule ahead.

“I have a rake of them over the next week and a half,” he added.

“All eyes over the next week will be on Ireland’s Katie Taylor in the women’s 60kg boxing, she is our golden hope and that’s when I’m going to drape the flag around myself.

“I’m trying to catch as much as I can. I was a ticket-website jockey. I was on that refreshing, refreshing, refreshing for the last week and a half. I picked up loads of stuff, including that volleyball.

“I didn’t know there was a roped-off area. Do comedians get to go there?” Ó Briain asked.

A number of the 40-year-old’s Twitter fans responded to his tweets by making suggestive remarks, believing him to be at the women’s beach volleyball event - a competition famous for the lack of clothes the players wear.

“It’s slightly annoying that every time I tweeted ’I’m at the volleyball’ someone replied saying ’we know what you’re looking at’, presuming there is only one kind of volleyball. They were wrong, although I am going to that one as well!”
