Last month was the coolest July in at least 10 years, with some places in the country seeing their coolest July in 40 years.

The average temperature at Knock airport was 12.6C, its coolest since 1998. Malin Head saw an average of 13C, which was its coolest July in 40 years.

Rainfall was above average nearly everywhere, with the highest amount falling in the Dublin area, midlands and southwest.

The highest daily rainfall was reported at Valentia where 32.1mms fell yesterday.

Sunshine totals for July were also below average.
